My name is Elizabeth Cook and I am the head coordinator for the Curing Cancer Music Fest. After the 2008 Runnels County Relay for Life, my relay team and I had a desire to do something big in 2009 for the American Cancer Society because of the impact the disease had upon my own family. You see, my mom is a cancer survivor.
This year was very special to me because it marked my mother’s 10-year anniversary of being cancer-free from the day she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I knew that I wanted to do something special to honor this wonderful blessing, so I came up with the idea of a dance.
Before I knew it, with hard work and determination my teammates and I had 6 great Texas Country Bands all donating their time and wonderful support. I'd like to thank Kelly Potter, Jennifer Korn, Terry Hucks, my loving husband Kyle Cook, and everyone else who has supported this great cause over the past two years. Here's a little history:
Our first event, held on May 16th 2009 saw over 800 people in attendance and raised more than $8000.00 for the American Cancer Society.
The 2nd Annual Curing Cancer Dance was on May 8th 2010. We had 11 Texas Country Music Bands: Zach Edwards Band, Rio Grand Band, Finger Pistol, Steve Helms Band, The Hawkes, Brian Milson, Buckshot Bradley, Rich O’Toole, Mark McKinney, Kyle Park and Charla Corn. Once again, everyone came together to fight to find a cure for cancer! Over 2000 were in attendance and it raised over $18,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Now we’ve upgraded the event to a full-blown music festival. The 3rd Annual Curing Cancer Music Fest was held on April 8-9, 2011. It was at the Ballinger Airport just like always, and the headliner was Chris Knight. Bleu Edmondson, Mark McKinney, Rich O’Toole, Brian Milson, Buckshot Bradley Crazywater, Krowhaven, Krysti Worley, Haden Burchard, Lary Joe Taylor, and Crossing Tyler all put on a wonderful show. Friday night we had an all-acoustic show, and Saturday we rocked the airport. With the support from everyone we were able to give back to the American Cancer Society $26,000.00!!
This year we are going to have the Curing Cancer Music Fest at it home the Bruce Field Airport in Ballinger! October 12 and 13, 2012 will be the date to save. More information on line up and tickets to come!I’d like to personally invite you to come out and have a great time supporting an excellent cause: Curing cancer with the American Cancer Society. With your help and participation, I know that one day we may just raise enough money to change the name of the event to The Cured Cancer Music Fest!
